What is an advocate?
An advocate provides emotional support, information, court
accompaniment, referrals, and safety planning for lesbians,
bisexual women, and transgender folks who are being abused
or have been abused by a partner.
What are some of the tasks an advocate does?
- Take hotline calls.
- Accompany folks to court and assist with victim compensation.
- Provide short-term counseling, information, and referrals.
- Attend coalitions, roundtables, and community meetings.
- Maintain relationships with community groups, organizations,
and advocates.
- Maintain records and resource list.
All volunteers of The Network/La Red participate in our
free training program. Aside from discussing the dynamics
of GLBT domestic violence, the training covers issues such
as oppression, crisis intervention, counseling skills, and
legal issues.
